— James E. Slavin
77, died Sunday, November, 17, 2002, at Genesis Elder Care Mountain View Center in Rutland after a short illness. He was born on September 6, 1925, in Mt. Tabor, Vt., the son of James and Mildred (Churchill) Slavin. Jim quit school to serve with the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 during WWII aboard the USS Ticonderoga, serving in Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, Philippines Liberation, Japan and China and was awarded the Purple Heart for his wounds received in action. The Navy was number one for Jim. He valued his Navy pride, his Navy boxing pride and his Navy buddies for life.
Jim worked many jobs
after the Navy. He valued people, not money or material things. He was truly amazing and we all feel special to have been given the gift of knowing how special he really was, the circle of friends we met through him. Jim will be remembered as an independent strong man to his final days, his vocabulary, his willingness to go out of his way for all of us, a cigarette in hand and above all his sense of humor. He had a very big heart, he welcomed and touched so many people through out his life. He will be missed by all his family especially Silas E. Dorr Jr., Eva, Jasper, Paul and Kate of N.
Chittenden with whom he resided with in recent months, Doris Dorr, Sonny Labonte and Leona. Jim loved to play golf, cards, horseshoes and baseball. He is survived by five children: Ann, Audrey, Linda, Susan and James; one sister, Doris Dorr of Danby; a longtime companion, Alexandra Wisockey-Kostechka of Clinton, Mass.; his good buddy, Silas Dorr Jr. of North Chittenden; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and his family at Mountain View Center. The nurses and staff who got to his heart and showed him great kindness, love, care and comfort for the great man and navy vet that he was. Our thoughts
and prayers are with you all. He was predeceased by a daughter, Connie; four sisters, Evelyn, Dalores, Gretchen and Hazel; two brothers, Ken and Leonard. Graveside services with military honors will be held at South Village Cemetery in East Dorset, Vt., in the spring of 2003 |
